Who is Ron Massey: My business history and contribution to the futon industry.

Wood:   We use only Canadian and New England grown maple to build our frames. Maple has the density and hardness that allows us to incorporate our proprietary "Wall-Hugger"conversion mechanismwithout the need of any metal components. When metal components are used, they usually need to be screwed or bolted to the wood. The constant strain on these connections during conversion to and from the bed position can cause the harder steel parts to wear out the softer wood parts. When it's all wood on wood, this does not occur. Plus it makes it all so much more "Organic"

Finish: All our frames are finished with "Watco Danish Oil" The oil is hand rubbed into the wood, giving it a warmer feel and deeper protection. Most frames are spray booth finished with polymer laquers that not only leave a cold feel and shiny look, but do not actually penetrate the wood, merely cover it.
If you accidentally damage your frame, with a Danish Oil finish youcan sand out the damage or stain, and simply apply a little more of the oil. Danish Oil also has the advantage of being more environmentally-friendly in that it has very low volatile organic compound emmissions. Hand rubbing also helps in that there are no over-spray fumes escaping into the atmosphere.

Construction: The only areas where steel is seen in our frames is in the use of bolts and cross dowels where the different parts that are to be assembled by the end-user are attached. The stretchers ( the long rails that connect the arms) and the seat and back deck rails, for example, are assembled with such hardware. Here too we do it a little better.Where most frames use two bolts at each joint, we worked out a system whereby only one bolt is used. This simply means less of the wood has been weakened by boring out the holes for the bolts.
In order for us to get these frames to you at a reasonable freight rate, the packages they're shipped in must be within the limits established by most courrier-type shipping services.( U.P.S., Purolator, etc.) The fact is that almost all other forms of trucking will not deliver parcels to residential addresses. And even those that do have minimum charges that are not realistic compared to the price of the product.
We started making "U.P.S.-able" furniture over twelve years ago, so you know that our experience with the whole process means your furniture will get to you on time, at a reasonable price..Undamaged.
The shipping related aspects of our designs bring with them some additional benefits. That fact that the frames are made up of parts that you assemble means that if you need a replacement part because of damage or even becauseof an error on our part, we can send that replacement part to you, usually at no charge, and very quickly. More and more of the frames you see in the stores today are from offshore companies in Malaysia, Brazil, and some old Eastern Block countries. When something goes wrong with those frames, you're very often out of luck.

Design: Although I've been designing furniture for over 30 years, I do realize that a cutomer may have ideas of their own on the subject of styling.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you'd like me to build something special. Because I am the manufacturer, I am able in most cases to accomodate special requests.
